Top 5 Tips for A Greener, Healthier Lawn

Part of having a beautiful home is maintaining a great-looking lawn. With a little extra TLC and these Top Five Lawncare Tips, you can make any lawn the envy of the neighbourhood, and show off your green thumb!

1. Spring Cleaning

A healthy lawn starts in spring. Wait until the ground has thawed and dried before kicking things off with a light raking to clear away dead leaves, needles, pinecones, branches, and other debris. Next, give your lawn its first cut of the year. You’ll want to trim your grass to roughly 2.5” to 3” and rake away the cuttings and any dead grass. Putting in this extra work now will help ensure a lush lawn come summer.

2. Lawns Are Great When You Aerate

Aerating is key to maintaining a beautiful, lush lawn. Perforating the soil lets water and nutrients from your fertilizer reach grass roots, so they grow deeper and stronger. While soil composition varies from lawn to lawn, a good rule of thumb is to aerate every year. If your lawn is small, a simple, manual tool will do the trick. For larger lawns, there are a number of motorized options to choose from. Your lawn will love you for it.

 3. Breakfast is Served

After being covered in ice and snow for months, your lawn is now waking up, and it’s hungry! Now’s the time to pick the perfect fertilizer to satisfy your lawn. A great spring fertilizer is Golfgreen® Bio-Weed & Feed 9-0-0. Applied in early spring, it nourishes your lawn after its long winter’s nap while preventing weeds from sprouting.

4. Fertilize Using the Crisscross Method

Any time you fertilize your lawn, be sure to use a spreader in a crisscross pattern for even distribution. Never apply your fertilizer by hand. Begin about a foot inward from the outer edge of your lawn and run along its length. As you move back and forth, observe the width of area where the fertilizer is being spread, and account for it when coming back around, taking care not to over-fertilize any one area. Make sure to close the spreader whenever stopping or turning. Continue with the spreader until you’ve applied an even application over the entire lawn. Then repeat the exact same procedure, moving perpendicular to your first application to create a crisscross pattern. Now you have a fully fertilized lawn!

5. Overseed Your Lawn

Overseeding your lawn is a good thing, especially in late spring. Overseeding now will give your lawn a fuller appearance and prevent weeds later. Start by lightly raking Golfgreen® Enriched Lawn Soil, triple mix, or compost into your lawn. This will let soil penetrate for improved moisture retention and root health. Next, apply seed and gently rake in to ensure contact with the soil. We recommend Golfgreen® NitroGROW Sun & Shade Grass Seed for successful growth in sun and shade. Its blend of premium seeds that are directly treated with a nitrogen complex and nutrients enable 3x faster growth and you’ll be seeing visible results in as little as 7 days!

Maintaining a beautiful lawn takes a little care, but it doesn’t need to be daunting. When you give your lawn the TLC it deserves and equip yourself with the right products, you will be rewarded with a lush, beautiful, and healthy lawn for many years to come.
